Fatal crash driver jailed

A man convicted of causing the death of a Fleckney man by careless driving has been sentenced to 21 months in prison

Usmangani Shaikh (44) was accused of causing the death of Paul Armitage on November 11, 2009.

He was sentenced on Wednesday to serve 21 months in prison as well as being given a three-year driving ban.

Mr Armitage died after the car he was driving was in a collision with a car driven by Shaikh, in Welford Road, Arnesby, on the A5199.

Mr Armitage was 29 when he died and had been married to his wife Anne for just seven months.

Originally from Husbands Bosworth, he had moved to Fleckney with his wife.

Mr Armitage was working as an engineer for the conservation and restoration of clocks and installation of bells.

He worked alongside his father Geoff Armitage for GD Armitage (Clock and Belfry) Work Ltd in Husbands Bosworth.

Paul was a bell ringer at the churches in Marston Trussell and Bosworth, and he also rang at other churches in the district. After his death, his father set up a memorial fund to erect a bell in his memory at St Nicholas Church in Marston Trussell. The appeal has raised thousands of pounds.
