"SAN FRANCISCO..."
The Canasi Sugar Refinery Bell was brought to the United States from Cuba by our founder, Milton Hershey in 1934 and placed in the center bell tower of what is now Catherine Hall. It remained there for decades. In 2001, it was placed in Copenhaver and at the time, it was 200 years old.
The bell could be originally in Hersey (oficially called Camilo Cienfuegos) - SANTA CRUZ DEL NORTE (MAYABEQUE) (CUBA) where the Hersey Company buyed plantations and mills. |

The Canasi Sugar Refinery Bell, a significant artifact, stands as a tangible link to the early industrial history of Derry, PENNSYLVANIA. Established in 1801 by the Canasi Sugar Company, the bell served as a crucial signaling device within the refinery’s operations. Inscribed upon its surface are the words: “Canasi Sugar Refinery – Derry – Established 1801.” This simple yet powerful statement encapsulates the factory’s origins and location.
The bell’s heritage lies in the vital role sugar production played in the region’s economy during the early 19th century. Its presence at the site of the Milton Hersey School (Hersey) reflects the evolving landscape of Derry, where industrial heritage was integrated with educational facilities. Current documentation focuses on its historical significance and potential for preservation, recognizing its importance as a representative example of early American manufacturing. |
