Catedral de Santa María de la Sede - SEVILLA (ANDALUCÍA)

THE BELL CHAMBER
On display in this seventh and last chamber open to the public are elements relating to the Giralda's primary function as a bell tower for which it is fitte with four groups or "coruses" of bells, some hung for full-circle ringing and others hung stationnary.
Seen to the back a metal headstock built in the 1960s which was recently replaced by a traditional wooden one. Hanging from the headstock is a cross-section of a bell and an antique clapper, others can be seen leaning against the sides of the chamber.
In the center on a pedestal is a Gothic bell, not from the Giralda but from the ceiling of the High Altar. It dates to 1509 and was made by Cristóbal Cabrera.
To the front are the remains of the Saint Cristóbal bell which broke on 14 February, 1981. These four fragments contain inscriptions indicating the bell was made in Seville, the date it was cast - 1663 - its weight of 19 cwt and 55 lbs, the name of the bell founder, Juan Gerardo, and an image of the saint to whom it was dedicated.
