Catedral de Santa María de la Sede - SEVILLA (ANDALUCÍA)

THE MACHINE CHAMBER We are certain that the Cathedral’s first architect was Maestre Carlin who, in fact, was called Charles Gautier - born in Rouen (France) around 1378 and it is likely he died in Seville in 1448 after being responsible for the construction of the Cathedrals of Barcelona and Leria. This was the architect that decided to use exclusively stone transported by boat from Puerto de Santa María in Cadiz. In order to move the blocks of stone they used machines like the ones here amongst which can be found the outstanding collection of sheaves, some of which are dated. The most modern ones are made of iron, the XVI Century ones have bronze wheels and wooden carcasses, and the oldest ones are made exclusively or evergreen oak. Other very interesting pieces are the carts for transporting blocks of stone, the replica of some XVI Century tongs and appliances for moving and hoisting blocks. Two stone blocks are also on display - one with a stone-cutter's trademark - as well as a mallet, an iron wedge and an unusual prismatic-shaped roller which was used until quite recently to grind incense but was also used for crushing the lime and pigments for the murals.
