Frequent use of bells in popular and literary poetics indicates the importance that the bell had for the individual as well as the whole community. An analysis of poems from the period of the Slovenian Moderna, Slovenian proverbs, sayings, and folk songs shows a number of findings: how the bell functions in these works; when its semantic aspect prevails over its musical one; the context of its material, metaphoric, and symbolic depictions; and how the texture of folk song reflects the musicality of the bell.
Keywords: bell, musicality, semantics, poetry, popular tradition.
