Ding Dong

OnThisDay 1882: Great Paul was rung for the very first time at its foundry in the town Loughborough in the East Midlands of England.

At 17,001kg (16 ¾ tons) it remains the largest bell ever cast in the UK. For comparison, Big Ben weighs in at 13,760kg.

Sadly, Great Paul, which hangs in the Cathedral's south west tower, hasn't rung for several years owing to a broken mechanism.

But you can see and hear it in this archive video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YislE_cMs9g
